Heavens Waiting Room

“Look, doc, I only have a few minutes left before I have to go.”

“I know. I expected you to stay true to your other routine engagements by leaving at 3:57PM; I understand that your schedule is most important to you. I’ve noticed a certain daily routine that you follow. If you don’t mind me asking, what’s so important that you have to leave my office at 3:57PM every time?”

“Well, I don’t mind you asking, but right now I’m too embarrassed to say. I’ll tell you what I’ll do for you, doc. If you will let me leave five minutes early all next week, I’ll tell you where I go and what I am doing.” I figured if he would let me leave a little early, it would ensure that I made it on time to see Abigail. Since the bottom had fallen out of my life, the few fleeting seconds that I shared with Abigail each day seemed to be all I had left to cling to.

“That sounds fine to me. It’s a deal. Well, Mr. Brady, since we only have a few minutes left in today’s session, why don’t you go ahead and finish your story. You were on your way to the hospital and–”

*

Oh yes. We quickly arrived at the hospital. Hurriedly, Officer John positioned his car right at the end of the emergency loop. While he was still putting the shifter into park, I frantically tried to open the door of the police cruiser, even pounding on the window, but to no avail. John soon saw my distress, so he walked around the side to open my door. I shot out of there like a bat out of hell and hotfooted up the walkway. John grabbed my arm right before I made it inside and said, “Son, you behave in there. The news you hear from the doctor is either going to be good news or bad. There is no in between when it comes to life.” I looked up at Officer John and motioned that I understood. “Now, go in there and find Piper.” John smiled while handing me his card. “Call me if you should ever need anything.” I shook his hand out of respect and made my way through the doors.

Rushing through the doors, I ran straight to the front desk. “May I help you?”

“Yes, my name is Jordan Brady, and my fiancé, Piper Layne, was brought here in an ambulance about a half hour ago. She was involved in an accident; some other girl in a truck hit her Jeep.”

“Please have a seat, sir, and I will call for you in a minute.” Several minutes went by, and no one came to assist me, so I made my way to the admitting clerk again.

“Sir, what is your name again?”

“Jordan Brady.”

“And you are here to see who?”

“Piper. I’m here to see my fiancé, Piper Layne.”

“And which room is she in, sir?”

That was enough of her useless questioning. I needed to find someone that wasn’t engulfed in a game of solitaire to help me with my questions.
